about

The Kaunas Requiem was an occasionally visited piece of predominantly electronic music by the Ukrainian musician and composer, Anton Dehtiarov. Commissioned by Richard Schofield and IC4LP in December 2015, and written in memory of the Lithuanian Jewish singer, childcare specialist and philanthropist Annushka Varšavskienė, the marathon six-day First Movement was premiered live inside an abandoned former synagogue that IC4LP rented for a month in Kaunas in September 2016.

Conceived to be performed live in front of an audience, very few recordings of the First Movement exist. The 12 pieces here are either short, remastered versions of some of the original live pieces, or come from a side project called The Aniushka Variations, an unusual musical experiment that was supported by the Canadian Embassy in Vilnius in which a group of young electronic musicians were invited to interpret, remix and re-version one of Dehtiarov’s compositions, and mix in other recordings that are related to Annushka Varšavskienė’s life.

Listen carefully to these pieces and you might just hear Annushka's 66-year-old sister, Masha Roskies, ‘singing along’ at her home in Montreal in 1973.
