about

Founded in Kaunas in 1927 by Annushka Varšavskienė (1895-1944)*, the Engel Choir (a.k.a. Engel-Chor, Engelio Choras) was a group of mostly amateur Lithuanian Jewish singers from various backgrounds and professions including office workers, labourers, housewives and university students. Active for about 12 years, the choir regularly performed on Lithuanian radio, represented Lithuania at the 1934 Levant Fair in Tel Aviv and recorded two 78 discs for the Columbia Gramophone Company in London. Several choir members emigrated to Palestine before the war, and it's believed that all of the members of the choir that remained in Lithuania were murdered during the Holocaust.

Discovered during research by Richard Schofield and IC4LP in 2017 and 2019, the four recordings that are featured on the choir's two 78 discs have been reproduced here with the kind permission of the National Library of Lithuania and the National Library of Israel. * Along with her two daughters from her second marriage, Frida (1922-1944) and Bella (1927-1944), Anna Varšavskienė was deported from the Kovno Ghetto On October 26, 1943. All three women were murdered at the Klooga concentration camp in Estonia when it was liquidated 11 months later.
